I\u2019m a finishing Colourist by trade and recently had the opportunity to work as an on-set Colourist. It\u2019s turned out to be very interesting to learn the technology and see what the crews have to go through. I just finished a 3 week shoot for a Steven Seagal film in Vancouver Canada. We shot Red MX and Canon 5D. Everyday I colour graded the dailies and use the principles learned right here in Digital Colour Theory Class and Colourist Strategies classes. Some of the examples are the colour temperature changes all day long. You really notice when you shoot in the sun then turn around for the other angle in the shade and the camera goes blue due to the colour temperature. It\u2019s easy to fix but it\u2019s helpful to understand what\u2019s going on. Yesterday it was funny when a huge silk was brought in to cover a parked car and the silk changed the colour temperature of the shot noticeably. You wouldn\u2019t think that would happen but it did.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m sorting through monitors and calibration software to get the best result for the budget. I\u2019d like to bring in my \u201cA\u201d monitor but the company has a budget and I have to deal with that.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m using Red CineX for colour grading and the software is beta but working reasonably well. I\u2019m waiting for Davinci Resolve to come out and see if that program can be used. I need a more full featured program to match shots and speed things up.<\/p>\n
I have a JL Cooper board that I had for a few years that I usr for grading but I need something for the camera truck. I have a demo board for Tangant and will be giving that a run next week.<\/p>\n
