So before BMD can offer official Resolve training to students, they have to have a number of trainers qualified to teach the classes. The T3 programme is aimed at getting established trainers up to speed with Resolve.

It was an invite only event, so the ten students were carefully selected from the Asian region.

I started my introduction to Jeff saying I might know a little about grading in Resolve, but what I know about Editing you could write on a postage stamp! (Note to anybody new to the training game: Always try to get a laugh from your students in the first 5 minutes!)

Seriously though, I have never been an editor, but the role of a colorist means I need more and more editing/conforming knowledge to complement my grading. Resolve has all the tools, so all we had to do was learn them.

There are many ways to do things in Resolve and what I quickly found from Jeff is that I had been doing things the long way…not wrong way, just the long way!

We all followed Jeff with our own machines using the supplied media and Resolve projects. This saved lots of prep time and made sure we could all follow easily. We followed the BMD Definitive Guide to Resolve Editing written by Paul Saccone.

After lunch on the second day we all had to pick a Resolve topic and teach it in front of the class for 5 minutes. For this you need a solid knowledge of the software that enables you get the message across to the students. To be a good trainer you have to know more than just how to use the software. Listening to students, adding value and offering a support mechanism are very important.

The online exam followed where we had to answer multiple choice questions.

If you have ever taken an Avid, FCP or Premier Pro exam, this will be something similar, where you have 60mins to take a multiple choice exam.

I enjoyed the two days. Big thanks to BMD for inviting me and to Jeff for running a great class.

Blackmagic Design will be announcing more details about their new training programme at NAB.

If you have any questions before then than you can contact the training department on learning@blackmagicdesign.com

Warren Eagles

The big question has always been, will they, or won’t they?
